Excuse me. Sam is short for Samir (at least it is in my situation). I'm not sure it's roots are Jewish. I could be wrong. Don't think I am. The closest jewish name to it that I've come across is 'Amir' (meaning 'prince'). I simply shortened it because these dumb arse westerners can't roll the 'r' and I got sick of having my name mis-pronounced.
