The Popes, realizing that the immense wealth of the Church would be passed down to offspring of Cardinals Blue Jays and Robins, decided it wasn't a good idea for priests to marry. Not that these horny bastards would still have kept their hands off of little children if they were married. It's just that Catholicism in particular provides a neat little way out of any personal responsibility. You ask forgiveness and a "forgiving" God grants it. People being what they are...and having made the deity in their own image, not the other way around...soon figure out that confessions on Sunday leaves six days for whoring and fornicating and fondling the altar boys behind the organs...not their organs...the music thingie. Then with pious mouth they can ask for forgiveness all over again.
Like all the Three Sisters...hypocrisy and bigotry are built-in features...why wouldn't they be...Men created them.
