What Iraq Was

I remember in 1981 going to a meeting in San Francisco where an official from the Iraqi government spoke about conditions there and how anyone with any claim to Iraqi blood could travel back home and see for him or herself, all at government expense. Within a few days the Iran Iraq America War broke out and all such trips, which had been going on for some time, were cancelled.

I came away with some nice coffee table books on Modern Iraq. Last night I was looking through one of them...the title is "Mesopotamia Yesterday, Iraq Today". It was sad to see photos of bright smiling Assyrians and Chaldeans...come on folks, let's just admit it...that's what they have back there, Christian OR Muslim.

The city of Baghdad and Mosul and Basra, the surrounding countryside, the date palm orchards, great rivers, dams, hospitals, Universities, and all the rest of the signs of burgeoning prosperity were wonderful to see and sad to realize that all that hard work and hope has been ruined, with the ruins being ruined as I write this.

Why?
