The other possibility has to do with Iraq. If Iraq is going to be targeted in the next war on terrorism, recognition of Assyrians may play into the justification of removing the evil regime in Baghdad, because Iraqh has been very oppressive of Assyrians (not that Turkey hasn't!), and there is the pesky (for Iraq and Turkey) Lausaune treaty.
