A secular form of Nationalism is only possible in nation states that have a relatively homogeneous religon and sects.
e.g. America and Australia.

A religiously based identity is usually adopted by religious and sectarian groups people from within the same nation state.
e.g. Iraq and Yugoslavia.

It is usually the Western powers in their drive for profit and control that foster religious and sectarian divisions within the same nation state.

Proof is in the wording.

Question : Why is it that the Western Press labels the Protestant-Catholic conflict dispute in Northern Ireland a SECTARIAN dispute, whereas the Bosnian War gave birth to the word ETHNIC cleansing?

Answer : The West uses its media to exacerbate by dividing and conquering the people of former Yugoslavia but uses a unifying word to show that the people of Northern Ireland are essentially the same, but religiously estranged.
