Half a million rally in Berlin against US invasion of Iraq

Berlin, Feb 15, IRNA -- More than 500,000 people here Saturday marched
in the biggest anti-war demonstration in Berlin's history, protesting
against a planned US invasion of Iraq, according to IRNA.
Demonstrators, among them peace activists, students and trade
unionists, carried signs saying 'No to US imperialism in Iraq',
'Vietnam, Iraq who's next?' and 'The only axis of evil: Bush, Blair,
Berlusconi'.
Protesters also chanted slogans like 'No blood for oil', 'Say no
to Bush's war' and 'Give peace a chance'.
Several thousand policemen took up position in the trendy Berlin
district of Mitte to keep a watchful eye on the peaceful protest
march.
The demonstration was organized by leftist parties, peace and
human rights groups, churches as well as several anti-globalization
organizations.
The German peace movement announced also further anti-Iraq war
mass protests over the next weeks.
It also welcomed earlier Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's steadfast
refusal to back an American assault on Iraq.
The overwhelming majority of Germans oppose a US war in Iraq,
according to various opinion polls.
