A park ranger ex-boyfriend told me once that the "Woody the Woodpecker" type of woodpeckers ( pileated
woodpecker) live in old growth forests.... When we went hiking in the old growth forests around here (in the valleys), we'd listen for the sounds they made, knocking their beaks against hollow wood. Haven't actually sighted one... yet. Anyway, this is one example of a species that is threatened with the logging of old growth forests.

National Environmental Trust Statement on the President's Logging Proposal

WASHINGTON - May 20 - The following is a statement by Robert C. Vandermark of National Environmental Trust, on the President's logging proposal:

"The Bush administration's so-called 'Healthy Forest Initiative' exploits the threat of wildfire to gut environmental protections and boost commercial logging. It is nothing more than a sham that plays off the fears of the American public.

"The President's proposal provides not one dime to even one homeowner to assist with fire prevention, and will not do anything to reduce the risk of fire. In fact, this is nothing more than another backdoor deal for the timber industry to log old-growth and large-fire resistant trees.

"With the potential for wildfire season around the corner, this is no time to play favorites. Instead of giving a green light to timber companies to log our national forests, scarce federal funding should be directed around homes and communities where it is needed most.

"It is time to start protecting communities at risk instead of filling the pockets of the timber industry."
