OK, so I was wrong about how I interpreted his point about the masonic rituals - as one continues down the merry road he lays out for the viewer in the film... it turns out the masonic rituals actually MEAN something to the poor delusional Barney.... God. The rest of the film is practically an anthem to male reproductive tract development (lots of phalluses - there's even a maypole dance - & testicular references), homoeroticism, & male adolescence. It's prettier than the 1st half, but also harder to decipher, & it looks like the protagonist is lobotomized at the end of the film (I suppose, as the last phase in adolescence). I'm not going to decipher it for anyone here, because interpretation of art is an individual thing. But the second half of the film also felt like I was watching someone else play a video game. & sometimes I feel like he exploits "odd" people - like the woman with leg prostheses. That's more of a cheap gimmick than art, in my opinion. Anyway, it's definitely a film for men....
