He's not for an international presence because he knows how reluctant the international community is to "donate" troops to back the U.S. See, the U.S. wants to start a WWIII in the Middle East - the more countries the U.S. drags into this, the more likelihood of a World War. I think the U.S. wants to extend the battlefield to the rest of the Middle East, with Israel as an ally. The LESS the international community participates in reinforcing U.S. troops, the less likely another World War. Of course, I think the U.N. should continue to give aid to Iraq, but it should not be another way for the U.S. government & multinational corporations to extend their power over Iraq.
Friedman is one of those slimey sorts of people who tries to make everyone his "friend" via the media, but imposes his own perspective on the issue (like a car salesman) - he says things like "I am like you when I think that..." He tries to lead people down his road of thinking in this way.
