I forgot to say that the persecutions occurred in the very late 1800's-early 1900's (esp. around the time of WWI). That is why we are still affected by it. Give us another 100 years & some worldwide acknowledgement of our suffering at the hands of the Ottomans during that time, & then, I think, we will move on. Some estimate that 750,000 of us were killed at that time - so it was a very large death toll & deserves attention.
Also, I forgot to add that Assyrians are the original inhabitants of northern Iraq, northeastern Syria, & a bit of western Iran, besides the southeastern part of Turkey.
