My point was that the Civil War makes a shoddy example of the "good" of national unity. It was just the rich, on both sides, manipulating the poor, on both sides, to fight a war for them. If color & the subjugation & torture of people for the color of their skin or their cultures were serious issues to be combatted by the federal government, then so many Native Americans wouldn't have been killed off so brutally even after the war. Corrupt politicians were incredibly good at using propaganda even back then - both sides had their rich & their faults. & their faults & manipulations were much greater than their merits. It is simply naive to think otherwise.
