These lurk in the water all the time around here, too. Copperheads in the water are more rare, though I did see a nest of them once at one of those falls...

One of my dogs, Caesar, a black lab mix, tried to sniff a cottonmouth once (it was lying around in the middle of the road, near a ditch). You shoulda seen the way my dog jumped when it opened its mouth at him! It was cool looking at how the white of its mouth made such a contrast to its dark coloring.
