"I really try to never do anything I don't believe in, so I don't want to
change it now. I really don't."

-- The late Paul Wellstone in an interview with CNN on the eve of his
Senate vote against the Bush war resolution.

Dear Friend,

The image of Senator Paul Wellstone was in the hearts and on the minds of
many of the hundreds of thousands of people marching for peace in San
Francisco, in D.C., and in other cities across the country and around the
world last Saturday.

It was a beautiful scene in San Francisco -- the spirited mass of colors,
ages and voices interacting so energetically. Yet it was also very sad. It
took the loud drumbeats of war to bring everyone together. It took the
death of a hero to remind us of the importance of courage and conviction.

I’m reassured and I hope you are too, by the strength shown by millions of
Americans who have come together to aggressively challenge President
Bush’s march to war. I’m proud to report that AlterNet has been at the
forefront of the rapid response that has slowed down the war machine.

More than two million people have visited AlterNet.org in the past few
months. You have come to gather the information and inspiration you need
to move to action, to hear the side of the story you rarely get from the
mainstream media, and to virally send many thousands of articles to your
family, friends and colleagues.

But our staff is operating beyond capacity. And if we are to succeed in
stopping war, there is much, much more to do over the coming months. We
need your help!

Tough times have forced us to tighten our financial belt and shrink our
staff. But as war with Iraq becomes imminent, we realize we must operate
at full throttle. At this crucial juncture in history, AlterNet needs to
be at full capacity to serve its constituency.

We need to raise $45,000 immediately in order to devote staff full time to
Iraq over the coming months, including supporting journalists in the field
and web wizards who help spread the important information over the
Internet.

I hope we can count on your help to empower AlterNet to reach millions
more in the U.S. and around the world. Please make a donation online at
