There's an article about archeologist experts giving maps of important archeological sites in Iraq to the US Defense Dept.

"American scholars are pointing to the Hague Convention of 1954, which prohibits the targeting of cultural and religious sites in war, to further their cause with the American government."

Like any international treaty/declaration matters to the US gov't!

Now, if I was a US military commander bent on getting a people to lose interest in any ties to their homeland (ancestral, etc.), I'd deliberately target, besides civilian infrastructure, ancestral sites w/ bombs... using the excuse that Saddam hides his weapons in ancient Babylonian tombs...
