Assyrian Aid Levies

It was a risky thing to say back during the British Occupation of Iraq and it isn't going to make you any friends to say it during the American Occupation of Iraq, but this collaborating with the enemies of the Iraqi people is not a wise move. After 9/11 some Saudi prince sent ten million to New York State to help in the aftermath and the money was promptly returned. Perhaps American Christian Assyrians don't want to see the irony of sending a penny in aid to the ten million in bullets they sent to Iraq, but the Iraqi people certainly do.

If Christian Assyrians want to downplay their connection to the lands of the ancient Assyrians because they remain dominantly Muslim...then they're the first to play the religion card. What would we expect other than the Iraqis would be proud of their national religion...no more than it's a surprise America is proud of Christianity and Israel of Judaism...and we idiots proud to be Christian. To ask the Iraqis to downplay Islam, or voluntarily give way to the religion of those who use religion as their one distinguishing characteristic and also as the one sure proof of the depravity of those who follow their own religion of Islam and of the religion of the people whose leader used the term "Crusade" proudly to describe the unwarranted attack against an Islamic State, like the first Crusades...is murderously silly.

The efforts made by ZOWAA and the Assyrian Aid Society are in the same vein as were the Levies of Iraq and the ten million from the Saudi prince. The Assyrian Levies were nothing more glorious than a band of collaborators set up by the British to play the part of watchdog and enforcers of their hated policies drawn from the ranks of the Christian Assyrian refugees Iraq had just allowed into the country, escaping the violence let loose against them by another set of Muslims. To wear the uniforms and carry the guns of the British and use them against the people, the Muslim Assyrians of Iraq, was not only treachery and rank ingratitude...but folly as well. It was Assyrians who brought on the attack against Simele. On their own the Iraqi army hardly had reason to single out that village. Haven't our own boys as well as the United States and Britain blamed the Iraqi parents time and again for the deaths and starvation of their own children? Weren't the fathers and mothers of Iraq supposed to rise against Saddam because their children were dying...and wasn't it their fault they couldn't topple a dictator the United States couldn't, or rather wouldnt?

Why are all Muslim charities in the United States suspect...why is anyone crtiticizing Bush liable to jail time, or expulsion from school, or loss of a job or being beaten up and possibly killed? What is so surprising about the people of one country resenting the attacks and threats and intrusion of another people into their lives and daily affairs? How would a Muslim ZOWAA operating in New York state...determined to aid the few Muslims there...receiving financial support from Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Syria or Iraq be viewed by the people of New York State? How would a "Muslim Aid Society" or a "Taliban Aid Society" or an "Iraqi Aid Society" presided over by a Muslim cook be received in New York State? How would New Yorkers feel about those Muslims who gathered once a year in a posh hotel in Riyadh or Damascus or Baghdad to eat fine MidEast, or worse yet, fine American cuisine, and openly raise money to be sent to Muslims living in Manhattan?

Not too well...and who would be surprised by any additional or increased or more virulent reprisals aimed at any Muslim any American could get his hands on?

We're doing "It" again. We're shoving our heads up our national arse and thinking no one notices, or cares. The only useful aid those people, the Christians there especially, need is aid to the entire country and region. This business of killing all children except your own will only postpone the day of reckoning for yours...it won't save them, on the contrary it places them at risk. We'd know that if we weren't so desperate to be perceived as doing something, ANYTHING, particularly what comes easiest, like eating caviar downtown... especially when our consciences bother us that all we've managed to do is get a lot of our people killed and help to ravage our own ancestry some more.

ZOWAA and Assyrian Aid...I'm sorry to say, are run by the same dismal sort of people we always manage to attract...those who would climb to Gratness or salve their conscience on our own backs...careless of what they do to us in the long run...long after they've pleased their own egos, given their last interview, met with the last third undersecretary to the fifteenth senior commissioner for MidEast Fuck-Ups...and long, long after the last dish has been washed and the last rack of lamb shat out.

Some day...if we would grow up and take ourselves seriously, we're going to have to stop "Eating Rich Food For Assyria"...or "Collecting Dimes For Assyria". But not any time soon I gather. I'll still donate sculpture to these events, if they'll take them from a "Traitor"...but I don't believe in them...not one bit. They are merely a modern version of the Levies...who led us not to greatness or a country of our own or security or Unity...but to the slaughter at Simele.

Will we never learn that we've been getting exactly what we deserve? Could we learn to act in ways that might get us something better we would also deserve?
