Detention extended for Brothers
CAIRO

An Egyptian prosecutor extended the detention of nine members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, including a former member of parliament, court sources said. Former MP Gamal Heshmat, Alexandria Center for Human Rights director Ali Abdel Fatah and five others were arrested in September inDamanhur in the Nile Delta north of Cairo.

They were charged with trying to revive a banned movement after pamphlets were seized. An expert showed that these pamphlets had the defendants' handwriting on them, which justified the decision by the prosecutor of the state security court to extend their detention, a court source said. Detentions are normally extended for two-week periods under emergency laws in force since president Anwar Sadat was assassinated by Islamic militants in 1981.

The prosecutor also extended the detention of two students, who were arrested several days after the others, the court source said.
