Military helicopters to combat Cairo smog
CAIRO

Military helicopters are to fly over farms on the outskirts of Cairo to find out where acrid dark clouds enshrouding the capital for the fifth straight autumn are coming from, press reports said.

"I am going to organize, in coordination with the armed forces, helicopters to survey the burning rice chaff to determine where it is taking place in each village and farm," Cairo's governor, Abdel Rehim Shehata, was quoted as saying by the government Al Akhbar daily. The measure, he added, will give the authorities a full report and precise photographs to help them to do battle against the clouds. Shehata, was quoted by the government newspaper Al Gumhurriya as saying that the smog was the result of "burning rice straw in Sharquia and Qualyubya, which occurred during the night". After the rice harvest, farmers in the Nile Delta burn the chaff to clear the fields for a new crop. But Environment Minister Mamduh Riad denied the remarks, saying the pollution was caused by exhaust from automobiles or from other sources. The Egyptian press frequently quotes doctors who say the "black cloud" is dangerous to health, particularly that of children and the elderly. The clouds usually last from mid-October to mid-November.
