Socialists Intl to hold congress in Brazil

SAO PAULO: Brazil's president opens on Monday a three-day meeting of socialists and social democrats from nearly 100 countries.

At the XXII Socialist International Congress, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - who also celebrates his 58th birthday Monday - is to meet South African President Thabo Mbeki, Spain's former Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, and Francois Hollande, leader of the French Socialist Party.

The about 600 delegates of the congress that are representing 150 political parties from Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa, came to South America's largest city to discuss UN reform, social justice and international trade and poverty.

Silva's Workers Party isn't a member of Socialist International but may join it next year, said party leader Jose Genoino.

Socialist International's secretary general, Luis Ayala, described the organization as the "world's largest political family seeking to achieve democracy and social justice.'' He said the meeting's main focus would be on the "definition of a new multilateralism for sustainable development and security.''

Other delegates include former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev; Italy's former Premier Massimo D'Alema; Daniel Ortega, former president of Nicaragua; Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic; Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller, and Sweden's Deputy Prime Minister Margareta Winberg.
