Had a most delightful debate in class today. We were reading over the reparations section of the treaty of Versailles, and how badly the allies raped Germany in that treaty. It was obvious that Germany could never be a productive country again if they were to pay out hundreds of billions of dollars in gold, give up the rights to their natural resources, give away their ships, cattle, everything from the top down in terms of what makes a society. Anybody who reads this document can see that it would result in another war with Germany down the line. Combine that with the feeling that the Germans got that they didn't even "lose" the war since they were winning on the Eastern front and holding their own on the Western front. Not a foreign soldier even stepped foot in their country.

This subject led into the current Iraq mess when the teacher asked us if we are making similar mistakes now in Iraq. He always quotes Thucydides who said in the 5th century BC that humans will always make the same stupid mistakes, again and again. So we start talking about Iraq and we have the patriotic glee club going on about how it was our duty to go into Iraq since there was an imminent threat against the US, they had weapons of mass destruction, Saddam was worse than hitler, they were going to attack the US, and one person said that "you can't bring democracy to people that aren't ready for democracy"...hello...cradle of civiliation anyone?? ...So I (and one or two other non-zombies) delighted in pointing out to them that a) Osama Bin Laden and Saddam were monsters of our own creation - we funded them both as proxies to fight the Russians and the Iranians, respectively b) that anybody who is living in poverty and squalor directly caused by a foreign power is going to do what they can to attack that power (and I brought up the Palestinian Suicide Bombers and the Sept. 11 hijackers), and that it's not inherent in Islam or Arab societies to produce suicide bombers, rather it's a result of poverty and US (and/or Israeli attacks), c) that Iraq after 10 years of sanctions had no navy, no air force, and a terribly equipped civilian army...and I said "Do you actually think Iraq posed a threat to us???" To which some responded that they could bring a bomb over here and set it off in a big city...blah blah blah bullshit. Did Fox News tell you that? d) I told the person who said Iraqis aren't good at democracy that if he looked at recent history, as recent as the 70s before the Iran Iraq war, that Iraq had better schools and hospitals than any other country in the middle east, and that they were doing just fine with their democracy before the US set them against Iran, and e) that if the US would have abided by international law and worked through the UN instead of committing foreign policy blunders ALL OVER THE WORLD, we wouldn't be in this position today...and finally, I said f) SHOW ME THE weapons of mass destruction!

Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck are people really that blind? Is FoxNews the definitive source for all of their information?
