Something in Sonyel's point about Assyrians having been screwed much worse by the collapse of the Ottoman Empire than they ever had been BY the Ottoman Empire makes sense. Seems to me you can't argue that we've become dispersed and fragmented and our children especially have grown further away from any consciousness of being Assyrian since we went out to live among Christian nations where it's been oh so easy for us to pass for White and be seduced away from whatever lifestyle it was we were calling "Assyrian"...which seems to have merely been simple Christian village life...but never mind that for now.

The Millet system had its flaws I'm sure...so does American Democracy, but it did allow for some measure of autonomy for the various ethnic and relgious groups within their empire. But we were so pleased to be living in "Christian" nations after we ran out that we overlooked what this could mean in terms of melting to mush in that Western Crock Pot. Since our only identity, as nominal Assyrians, is a Christian one...put us where every asshole is a Christian and we become what we've been since the days of Abgar...Judo/Christian assholes. And to make the point really stick let's recall the joy with which the Phoenix community is busy raising millions for a church, when there's one on every corner already...(I mean is Christ a UNIVERSAL god or isn't he? Go into any fucking church and pray alright already), but does nothing you could remotely call "Assyrian". Who's raising any money for an Assyrian Cultural Center? And if the feeling is that a church can serve both functions as well...I rest my case, because this shows right where our focus has always been, in the modern era and the problem it's created in maintaining any identity past a generation or two in the Christan nations we thought would prove to be our salvation.

Our sense of community, at least in those villages, would have remained stronger had we remained. That's one point Sonyel makes that I can't find a flaw with.

The Turks weren't the disaster that hit our community...it was Western Christianity that clobbered us...you know, those two fat tag team wrastlers, East and West...when Eastern Christianity takes a break from driving us to our knees...its partner, Western Christianity, steps up to kick us in the groin. Though Gringos dislike Darkies in general and look askance at our people and even more at darker ones...it took an attack against New York by Muslims to fine-tune their hatred at "Dark" American citizens and legal immigrants they'd otherwise been able to tolerate till then if not exactly like. Same thing in Turkey and wherever else we got caught between religous factions. Our Christians should have known that the moment Great Britain and the rest of them Christians dropped anchor in the Bosphorus, their days were numbered. Had to be.

So, who to blame? If these same Christians are glad now that Muslims in America have been "exposed for what they realy are"...for what they MIGHT do to betray America to their Muslim co-relgionists, then they should be better able to appreciate how equally stupid and barbarous and self-serving and cowardly Turks took advatage of an attack against their country to vent their bigotry and hatred at Christians. BooHoo, Hajjar and the rest behaved no differently than bigoted Turks who were eager to play up "Christian Duplicity and inherent violence". I'm sure that as much as we approved of Bill Reiley and the rest of that pack on TV..there were Turkish "commetators" in 1915 ratcheting up the "news" in Istanbul by, "Examining the Christian Question".

Yet we look upon these rich and powerful Christians, who by the way have no use for us except to use us...as saviors, champions and friends, completely overlooking the fact that they've had no trouble at all killing and raping and robbing each other with abandon for centuries. What made us assume that Christian would befriend Christian? What else besides the dumb cluck Christian religion itself?

I hardly think the Turks all of a sudden developed a murderous hatred towards Armenians AS Armenians...or as Christians either, for no reason whatsoever save for "that's the way Muslims are". A nation facing outside agressors would hardly choose that time to turn against itself as well. More than likely the Brits knew what they were doing when they "pleaded" with the Sultan to "respect" minority rights, that minority being the Christian Armenians who made no secret of their joy at the impending war and even set to work within the country to bring about disruption and speed the war forward...and these would be the same Brits who killed thousands of Hindus and raped their land...showing "tolerence" to the fucking Wogs by allowing them to serve the British Empire. America and Britain have a deeply embedded history of intolerance...Turkey never did. The Turks resented a separatist movement within their country...a fifth column...as any nation on earth would. I mean the United States was terrified of boys scrambling over hills and wedding parties in Afghanistan...a country so devastated it could hardly maintain its own poverty unaided.

I'm certain there was a "Patriot Act" hurriedly passed through the Turkish Parliament back then...and what's Bush or Rumsfeld and Ascroft but a low-grade Attaturks seeking to "unify" their nation and build up patriotism...and what did all that exhortation to "going back to real American(Turkish?)values" do but but get a few Sikhs and other darkies in America killed and make the country transform itself overnight into an almost military junta...as happened in Turkey. Christians within Turkey were made to pay for the impending attack by Christian nations...for the keen delight with which they anticipated their "Deliverance" from "Turkish cruelty" and was seen by Turkish Christian citizens as Jesus himself coming in the form of Her Majesty's most Christian Soldiers "onward as to war" to SAVE them. There were probably several Mullah Pat Robertsons in Turkey also, blaming everything on "them people" and they would have had a strong case since Christian nations were inded getting ready to attack the "Sick Man" of Europe...whereas oil producing Muslim countries today couldn't be more in the pocket of Western Christianity if you sewed them in.

I think it's very difficult for ardent Christians to rationalize their minority status anywhere. Jews are used to claiming their god loves them best when he allows someone to beat up on them. It's a compensaton mechanism they had to come up with early on...sort of forced it on themselves. There they were, without a fork to eat goat turds with, claiming their ONE god...the only TRUE god in the Universe loved them and only them and that all those other gods who were smiling down on and providing cutlery for the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and Romans were all false gods. Any sane person, any sane Jew would have said, "pass me the fake gods any day, I'm tired of locust casserole". It was a hard sell...convincng Jews they really had it better than all those heathens and pagans...which could be the reason they developed a reputation as people who drove a hard bargain and could sell anything to anybody...they got great practise early selling themselves on their own religion.

Christians however weren't used to that sort of argument. Jews didn't claim to have been visited by the son of god who got himself kiled and gladly too, for "their sakes" as Christians did...pretty heady stuff. If you believed Jesus was it, then the next logical thing to assume would be that he would become supreme on earth...a guy who can make wine out of fishes, or whatever it was...maybe he walked on fishes(?)...anyway, that kind of a friend in high places would be able to pull at least a few strings for his believers. But he couldn't..or wouldn't. Christians weren't as pre-disposed to say..."Jesus loves us, that's why this lion is chewing on my arm right now"...though they WILL say it's a "test". They just won't call it a SIGN of god's love, as Jews were forced to. Christians expected to be able to say, "Jesus loves me that's why the Roman Emperor is wiping my ass for me...cause I was meek and now I inherit the earth"...which is an odd thing for a truly meek person to look forward to and dream about.

Beneath their meek exterior Christians are boiling mad that Jesus is nowhere to be seen and that in the MidEast especially, which used to be "theirs"...Muhammad came along and stole the show. That being the case Christians aren't disposed to look favorably on the people who put Jesus in his place...that's why any Muslim success or decency can't be tolerated but just galls the balls of our Christians all the more. They're put together in such a way as to HAVE to see evil and depravity and all sorts of nastiness behind whatever Muslims do...Jesus makes them do it...and Jesus made them betray their fellow country-men and women time and again...up to this present Crusade.

Any traitor, just before he's shot, can claim to be a "Martyr" to his cause. Jesus certainly did.
