New deal to be signed for water export to KKTC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANKARA - A new agreement is expected to be signed today to facilitate transportation of drinking water from Turkey to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), the Anatolia news agency said.

Potable water from a Turkish Waterworks Authority (DSI) facility in the southern province of Mersin will be transported to Turkish Cyprus through special containers called vessels. An Israeli company, Ibar Limited Company, will be responsible for the transportation.

The company is expected to sign an agreement to that effect with Turkish authorities today.

DSI, which operates Soguksu-Aydincik facilities in Mersin, will be a guarantor in the agreement.

Under the agreement, vessels will carry a total of 3.6 million cubic meters of drinking water annually from Soguksu-Aydincik to Lefkosa and Gazimagosa in the KKTC.

The agreement will be extended by another year if at least 80 percent of the 3.6 million cubic meters of water could be transported to the KKTC in a year. The agreement will be valid for at most six years.
