I married my high school sweetheart and we had a sweet boy before going our ways. I visit in the neighborhood near the old school where my ex-wife's mother still lives. They are of French-German extraction and as White as you would wish...if you made such wishes. This woman is hale and hearty and lives a full life as she always has. Sometimes I see her walking when I'm on my way somewhere and we chat. The Assyrian Catholic Church of something or other is within a block or two of both our houses here in Campbell, California...a sort of stain in the center of San Jose.

Before the actual fighting in Iraq this time around she and a passle of her friends voluteered to pass out flyers condemming the Sanctions and the slow strangulation of the Iraqi people...whom it bears repeating over and over never did a damn thing to any American interests anywhere. Once, when we stopped to talk a couple of years ago, she was very upset but mostly confused because she and her friends, all stately grandmothers, had been denied permission by the Assyrian priest to hand out the flyers at his church...something they thought would have been appreciated or at least allowed.

You can forgive them for wondering if there was any connection, besides an opportunistic one, between the congregants and the dear homeland they talk so much about. They were not prepared to hear that in this day there were people still out for the blood of others of the "wrong" religion.

I really couldn't explain to her in any way that didn't make me want to crawl into a hole and say, with so many thousands before me..."Assyrian? Who me?
