There are two kinds of Cristianity at least and they bear no resemblance to each other...and neither of them looks a thing like anything Christ would have associated with.

First you have our kind, the "Get Kicked" kind in which the humbler and meeker and more ignorant and cowardly you are the greater your reward in heaven and the sooner you'll be sent to get it. In their 13 volume set on everything you ever wanted to know about anything, Will and Areil Durant state that world events "conspired" to prepare the way for a Christ. The Roman Empire had assiduously created the conditions under which that sort of message could be formulated and become popular. For at least three hundred years before the birth of Christ the Romans had pretty much shortened everyone's life span and given them less and less reason to hope for a life outside of abject slavery, misery and humiliation on earth. People condemned to death by the Emperor couldn't even hope to escape by sailing anywhere...as the Romans were well organized enough to find you and find you they would. When you were told to go home and slit your wrists, you did...the authorities knew they wouldn't have to make sure you did because there was nowhere for you to go. They made death the only escape.

The Hebrews tried rebellion often enough and it hadn't worked. Any humane Jew would have counselled acceptance of God's will...something the Jews were already used to giving as an explanation whenever their assholes blew up...God was testing them because he loved them so. However...to make all this testing palatable the idea was floated that an afterlife was available to those who wanted one...and who wouldnt...especially when the tables would get turned and the oppressors would rot in hell while their victims mounted on high. Since life had to be one Roman vale of tears why not believe there was a rainbow at the end of it...what could you lose? And the fact that this paradise was to become the point of your miserable life on a miserable earth where any sort of striving was useless and all empire-building meant effort and toil and math and science...and maybe the subjugation of slaves and the making of new corpses and widows...maybe waiting by idly was the best thing to do until your lucky day came and you dropped dead.

What was left of the Assyrians, themselves now subjected to those who would conquer and enslave and transport weaker people, could have found this message appealing. At no time in our history was getting kicked around by your god or abandoned to the tender mercies of your enemies ever a sign that god loved you and was testing you. We believed god loved us most when we did the best...this other thing was invented by people who had to rationalize their dismal status as a reserve labor pool for whomever was short of helping hands. Since we no longer had a lot of control over our destiny here on earth, we joined the ranks of distraught, disenfranchised people who'd been offered the unbelievable "gift" of being able to run heaven and eternity the way they wanted to where they couldn't protect a bean field on earth. Pretty heady stuff.

We are of the meek branch of the Christian faith and naturally we have to be proud of it and make the most of getting chased out of our homelands and being unable to protect our families or property. We too have learned to say it's "God's will" that we suffer so and our rewards will come later...maybe. Oddly enough, however, we don't mind at all when some Christians pick up guns to fight and steal...we'll even buy them bullets and pray a lot harder.

These other Christians are the "Kick Ass" kind. As far as they're concerned heaven should be on earth AND in the sky. As anyone who works for five dollars an hour knows...you don't get a dime's raise without a fight...these Christians are fully prepared to do what humans have to do when they want heaven on earth...they lie, cheat, steal and kill...especially kill because you're going to have to do a lot of killing if you want to corner the market on the stuff an earthly paradise is made of...like oil for one. These people aren't Christian in the sense that they're kind and self-effacing and generous to a fault...things all kinds of people have been without reference to any religion, least of all Christianity. They are "Christian" because they're willing to accept the goodies that come from joining, symbollically, in the execution and the eating and drinking of Christ's body and blood afterwards. That sort of ritual celebration turns people savage and it did. But it also shows them a neat way to wash themselves clean from all the blood they spill getting more goodies. They convince themselves they're doing god's work in saving souls, if they can't save the bodies...and if they have to kill your body...why let your petroleum farm go to seed? Why not take your goods and put them to more of "God's Work".

The "good Christians" provide the cover...the whitewash for the bad ones. They're the ones they put on the corporate cover...the logo on the private jet...the ones trotted out for photo ops and the dedication of shopping malls. The REAL...the absolutely real and no-nonsense Christians are the murderers...who've learned how to use the bloody initiation into Christianity as a way to bring along dedicated soldiers for Christ...to make people just crazy enough "For the Lord"...that they'll kill anyone in any manner and feel "good" about it later...later when the goodies flow like the blood of Jesus into a cup they'll drink from.

Assyrians were pagans?
