Farid;

I, in no way, am trying to defend religion; how could I, when I am an atheist? Many believe that religions grow out of the fact that humans started to question the world and where they come from. They assume that it was the mere sense of finding a meaning for their lives and why they are on Earth that drew them to discover God and establish religion. I disagree with this notion. I believe (not trying to offend anyone who is religious on the forum) that religion is for the weak mind. A mind that cannot accept the fact that once dead we are finished: no after life, no honey and milk, no 40 virgins. As humans, it is hard for us to come to terms with this fact. We want a sense of continuity, a sense that life will go on even after death.

On the point you made: I disagree with you, I still believe that the crusades were not “about” religion. Yes, it is true religion was used to mobilize the public behind the governments and the rich, but it was not the cause. Religions have been used to subjugate the human race for thousands of years. The medicine men had special roles and privileges, the priests have the final say in many societies (for example their views on abortion which subjugate half of the society), the mullahs control Iran. Religions are simply tools to serve a certain class of people and keep the rest in line, either through promise of rewards in after life or simply killing them to eliminate their danger. Religions are economic tools.
