I have heard this same phrase misused in the past, but it may have origins in a well intentioned motivation to reduce or understand the animosty of others towards oneself by deintegrating personal bigotry or detaching to some degree from interacting from a viewpoint that cannot even see that there is a "backyard" of viewpoint that can be see beyond, much less empathize or consider that others percieve their yards slightly differently, for various reasons. It was somewhat amusing, if sometimes irritating to see that and some other cliches of the time over and misused, oftentimes very innaproppriately and often by those who probably didn't really know that much about the what or why of some of their rhetoric. For the person you are having discussion with to misuse concepts that are probably more suited for introspective self examiniation as last resort "ad homunin(sp?)" type responses in discussions has it's amusing aspects. Whether deliberately dishonest or from ignorance, indicates that your point was probably more valid than anything the other could come up with. One fun response could be along the lines of "so you have no ego.. well who is the you that has no ego, then?".

This part of your post:

"So...how do you get millions of people to go along with a coup in the United States and then the Sovietization of our legal system and a
deliberate policy of starving Iraqi children to death and disease...of even having such a concept as "enemy children"...and caring not a rat's ass
when we find there were no WMD's...which our "leaders" knew from the start? Well, to start, you'd have to define self-love in very immediate and
self-serving ways that fail to take into account consequences for ones long-range well-being, never mind one's children or theirs. You'd also
have to shatter any self-esteem at an early age...and public school is a great way to do that and more...like rob people of self-confidence and
substitute pablum and treacle and "closure"...keep them from becomming conscious of what surrounds them and who pays for this "envious
lifestyle" they think to love themselves through...also encourage them to be unable to control their own behavior, at parties but also at the office
and home without drugs...and of course, the most important of all...have them lose all touch with external reality and the ability or inclination to
form opinions about it on their own... but live in a Fantasy Island world of Lotteries, Bingo and Vegas and a peculiar world view as manufactured
and packaged and marketed as anything else we're sold."

.....rings so true and insightful it is what entreated me to reply (though I haven't much to contribute to the discussion) Thank You for that!.
