Hi M.A.W,

How have you been? I miss you. I phoned your place a couple of months ago your dad told me you're still in Egypt. E-mail me if you want and let me know when you're returning.

>I just wanna know why is this Chaldean/ Assyrian war still raging?

We have misuderstood nationalism and our identity completely. Everything else we build on this "shabby" foundation serves to only compound this misunderstanding.

>Are the Assyrians still claiming Chaldeans are Assyrians and if so, why? Why >when the Chaldeans are so insistent (sp?) on gaining recognition as a >separate entity and trying to forge their own sense of identity?

Actually in Melbourne we have started to respect and recognise all both our Assyrian and Chaldean identity (Not plural.)
In the search for identity our sectarian amber has begun to melt but the religous amber which separates us from Assyrian-Muslims is stronger then ever.

And I love the point you make. Who are we to Assyrianise our Chaldean brethren? Weren't we the same people who claimed that we refused to be Arabised by Saddam's government?

>Whilst I was working with Assyrians in the short period of time that I did back in Sydney, I used to ask this question, and I will ask the members of this forum...

>If (as we often claim as Assyrians) we desire self-determination, in Iraq and >elsewhere, are we not perpetuating the same hate crimes against the Chaldean >people by denying them their human right of evaluating their own sense of >culture, identity and tradition? Why are we so defensive against the Orthodox->Catholic split that occurred? Is it a religious thing? I mean the Chaldean >split was based on religious creed was it not?

We are in a sectarian struggle with our Chaldean people and a religous struggle with our Muslim people in Iraq.

Both struggles are require us to build up a false identity, culture, language and history to perpetuate the myth of separate ethnicities within Iraq. This is far from true.
It is as impossible for the Shiite to be an ethnicity as it is for the Protestants to be one.

>I really wish to know the answers to these question because it just doesnt >make sense to me. Is it perhaps toward a more nostalgic purpose that the >Assyrians want the Chaldeans to be tied to them in every way?
>Is it because the majority of "Assyrians" in North Iraq are actually Chaldean?
>Excuse my ignorance once again, I have been out of the picture for a while now...

I think the Christian-Assyrians are desperately looking for a new homeland, not realising that they already have one. We still have this mistaken belief that we can somehow steal a piece of land in Bet Nahrain, with the help of the yanks and establish a homeland. the Chaldeans are important for this very reason because without them we have barely enough Assyrians in Iraq to establish a basketball team muchtheless a nation.

Our modern history has been one of persecution and upheavel and I understand why their goal is autonomy, but we should step back a little and attempt to understand that all the people of Iraq are ethnically the same people. Our goal should be the maintenance of our Iraq's ancient Assyrian culture, language and customs as a part of the rich tapestry of Iraqi culture and history.

This should be our gift to our homeland.
