Americans like to brag about their freedom. It is true that Americans are free to go out shopping, to wear and eat what they like, to buy a house and a car, to go to the baseball games or to own a machine gun. But because they are non-politicised, they don’t really feel any form of oppression. The majority thinks that it is unpatriotic to criticise the president.
Furthermore, people believe that politics is a dirty field infested by the crooks, and as a result, they don’t even care to vote. Politicians are divided into two parties without much difference between their platforms;
mainly to serve special interests and power centres.
In order to find out how free Americans are; one must ask those enlightened citizens who dared to criticise the views of the existing establishment. In the fifties, Senator McCarthy went out witch hunting for Anti-American activities. Hundreds, if not thousands of Americans had lost their jobs or had been castigated. Sarcastically one Russian commented “In America every body is free to criticise and attack communism, similarly, in the Soviet Union, people are free to criticise and attack capitalism.”
Since then, not very much has really changed. Now Bush has replaced the Anti American Activities Act with the Patriotic Act and it is an insult to be called a liberal.
As an example, the White House's dogs are already out to undermine Mr Paul O’Neil (The Price of Loyalty) and Richard Clarke (Against All the Enemies). As usual, they never debate issues but will try to attack the person. Both O’Neil and Clarke have left the government and dared to criticise Bush’s obsession, not with Al-Qaeda, but with launching a war on Iraq. The President’s men will go to the FBI to dig all files, hoping to find some dirt to throw at these two gentlemen, or to accuse them of being unpatriotic; while US men and women are fighting in Iraq. It is American-style political freedom, just like in the good old communist states.
I the USSR, every body had to serve the communist party. In America, all politicians are to serve power centres who are financing Senators, Representatives and White House men.
There is a tacit understanding that the war on Iraq means money for the Pentagon, for the Arm industry, for the lobbyists (Perle, Feith, Kissinger, Cohen and Carlyle) and for the US Media empires.
