CHICAGO (Reuters) - A set of 2,500-year-old clay tablets depicting life in ancient Persia is being returned to Iran by U.S. archaeologists, the first such exchange since the 1979 Iranian revolution, researchers said on Wednesday. The 300 clay tablets impressed with cuneiform writing in the Elamite language were unearthed by archaeologists in 1933 near the ancient capital of Persepolis and were lent to the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute. The tablets, which are being sent to the Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization, date from the middle of the reign of Darius I, 509 B.C. to 494 B.C., and document such details as barley and beer rations for average laborers and the origin of workers from the far-flung Persian empire. Tablet expert Charles Jones said the tablets functioned much like credit card receipts and have yielded "an incredibly rich amount of information." They showed workers came from distant lands ranging from modern-day Egypt to India. In 1951, the university returned more than 37,000 tablets to Iran but this batch will be the first sent back since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Digital images of the tablets will also be shared with Iranian researchers. Oriental Institute researchers have resumed digging in the region in collaboration with colleagues in Iran, and the return of the tablets is part of a broadening of contacts, Oriental Institute Director Gil Stein said.
