Why is Christianity so Important to Assyrians?

I am one of those who believe that every human activity is for the survival of the species and propagation of the gene. Some may argue, correctly, that there are many exceptions to this rule such as art, science, etc. But, are they really exceptions? Don’t they, in the end, translate into economic gains and power? Maybe and maybe not. Even if there really are exceptions, they are few.

So, why is Christianity so important to the Assyrians to the point that it has severely erased and suppressed their national identity? I blame it on the fact that in today’s World Christianity is associated with such words as “scientific progress”, “civilized society”, “democratic government”, “moon landing”, “searching for cures for cancer and AIDS”….

In the science of physics, and in an ideal World, one can predict the behavior of a particle within a region by studying its behavior in two different points. I always like to extend this to “two extreme points”. Of course extrapolation is risky, but it does more good than harm, it solves more problems than it creates.

How do we apply this rule to the Assyrians? Let’s assume that point number one is the present situation in which Christianity is associated with all that is good. For point number two let’s assume that in a parallel World Christianity is associated with cave-inhabiting monsters that kill and cannibalize innocent people; they rape and murder innocent children. Their prisoners are offered to their God, Christ, as sacrifice. Simply put, Christianity would be associated with all that is Evil, kind of like the communist in the 50s.

On the other hand, Ashurism (let’s call the original religion of Assyrian Ashurism) was associated with all that is good. It is a Western religion associated with progress and civilized behavior. The first man on the moon was a follower of Ashurism, so were Louis Pasture and Robert Koch…. In such a case what would the Assyrians do?

I can assure you that they would all convert in minutes and be digging everywhere in Mesopotamia trying to find anything Assyrian and non-Christian. After all they would be “the Original Assyrian how established Ashurism” (a nice meal ticket, isn’t it?) They would be prying to Ashur instead of Christ. Below I give you a few examples of what they would say:

1. Now they say “we speak Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke”; then they would be saying “Aramaic was the Lingua Franca of commerce and science spoken from the Mediterranean shores to India, Christ had to use it to spread his message of hate, it is not our fault he used our language”.
2. Now they are saying “we are the first Christians”; then they would be saying “we were the first victims of forced conversion by the uncivilized Christians, but thanks to our God, Ashur, we all found our way back to our roots”
3. Now he is saying “I am Fred Aprim, a true Assyrian Christian”, then he would be saying “I am Ashur Ibn Ashur Ibn Ashur Ibn Ashur, the Head Priest of the Great Temple of Ashur in Nineveh”
4. ………
5. ………
6. ………

Now, for a moment imagine that being a Kurd was associated with all that was good, would we be hearing them saying “The Kurds and Assyrian have been living in the same area for thousands of years. There are scientific studies showing that they are genetically the same people. The Kurds are assimilated Assyrians, they are our brothers and sisters; they are so GREAT simply because of their Assyrian roots”?

What do you think?
