Assyria is ruled by Spoilers...those who would ruin a thing if it promises to get away from them. It either exists the way they say it must...or for all their protestations of devotion and the rest of it...one wrong move and it's gone. I imagine many an Assyrian girl knew that if it became her misfortune to be kidnaped and raped by a Muslim...her father, who otherwise probably showered love and affection on her...would turn his back and turn her out, adding his own brand of cruelty to what the rapist had just done, because she'd gone too far beyond the point where she could expect to be dear or precious to him any longer but had become a source of "discomfort" to him. Never mind just falling love with a Muslim which also gets you banished in Assyria. That's how fit Assyria is to hold its head up and the main reason it doesn't have a pot to piss in...it's a throw-back to another time and a mentality that won't be able to run a modern nation-state...let alone a bingo club or forum.

Narsai once explained that the reason he'd run screaming in the night back in the 50's was because he'd taken a young Assyrian couple, newly arrived in San Francisco, to their club one night because the young professionals wanted to join an Assyrian organization. At the meeting when Narsai stood to introduce them and suggest the group welcome them as members...one fellow spoke out that they wanted no more "FBIs"...and when asked to explain what the letters stood for...said, "Foreign Born Idiots". It is of course unnecessary to point out this fellow was also foreign born. Narsai was so mortified he left and never returned or joined any other Assyrian group till I took him out of mothballs.

I can understand his shame and disgust...but this is excatly what's been happening to us. Ignorant people, crude and mean-spirited have been left in charge because the rest of us simply walked out. Doesn't say much for our staying-power or interest in Assyria. Narsai sure as hell didn't quit any catering jobs or refuse customers based upon such a low threshold for discomfort.

Shoot...I've dealt with much worse and in the famous words of Samuel Goldwyn..."I GIVE ulcers, I don't get them". Seems to me the first thing that has to change is we stop running from our own shadow...stop being driven out of meetings or clubs by the weakest and most dunderheaded of us all. It speaks poorly for our argument that the grave and serious crimes of Islam drove us out of our "dear" homeland that we weep so for today. Seems to me a foolish word here or there would have been enough to get us going. Or...having run so far and so often, we're ready to sprint for the horizon at the slightest hint of trouble.

Unfortunately and as the world wags...Narsai now has a slight discomfort factor in me. Will a few silly words from me get him to leave Assyria once again? Hope not. I don't like what he's doing but I'm not going to be pleased to be the one who spoiled it...not simply by saying a few silly words. I'd like to think he has more gumption than that. I honestly believe these dinners and the efforts he and the others make are another in a long list of tragic errors because a few people can't reist feeling good about themselves for "saving Assyria". But it only compounds the dismalness of the whole thing to have someone like Narsai back off because his name gets bandied about a little. he doesn't have to worry...I will tell no lies and stay away from personal stuff. But he knows best.
