The irony in this situation was that I was from America...and five of the six other people were Americans too and the one Mexican was as Gringo as he could be...we took our crap to THEM! I was treated fairly and kindly by all the police and officials and court..which would NOT have been the case had we been a bunch of Mexican morons doing this in America!

On my first drive down to Mexico in 86, Narsai warned me to be careful because Mexico is a "dangerous" country...we`d just had a drink at the bar in the St. Francis Hotel on Union Square, my Jeep was packed and ready to go in a lot around the corner. I was driving fown to Mexico City to check on the progress of the Ashurbanipal, which we cast there...my response was are you nuts? He lives a few miles from Oakland, California, which for a few years then was the murder capital of the United States...there is no such thing as random murder in Mexico...people don`t go into schools and shoot children...there are no snipers...if you`re caught with a handgun of ANY kind you go right to jail..no questions asked...I was robbed by a taxi driver in Mexico City once too...big deal...robbed of a few bucks and no weapon used, just fast and loose with my change.

There isn`t a more dangerous country on earth than the United States whose citizens can be blown away at school..at work...at a party...sitting on their front steps...where the police are as likely to kill you as is anyone else is..and where they just let all sorts of murder weapons, that`s all they are, back into the cities.

I lived in St. Helena for nine years...right in the midle of California wine country...in the Napa Valley where there must have been more millionaire`s than anywhere earth..where limousine`s were as plentiful as Ford pick-ups...where Coppla lives, Madonna has a home...Robin Williams and who know who else..the quaint little town drips money and the average tourist at that time made no LESS than $50,000 a year...and that was poverty level...yet I never ONCE let my children walk anywhere without me right behind them..not once..not to the fancy little movie house Coppola restored..not into the ridiculous boutiques or toy stores..not down the next ailse at the grocery store....the first time I EVER let them out of my sight was in a small beach town in Mexico where they went shopping at the market for juice and rolls for breakfast..the FIRST time..and the only time I felt they were safe...Mexico is a haven and a heaven compared to the United States...

...a country where the female police officers walk a beat holding hands...and where 90% of the men in jail for murder are there for killing a wife`s lover is about as civilized a country as you`d hope to find...
