AINA: Iraqi Census to Exclude Expatriates

Earlier reports of assyrian inclusion in the upcoming census had buoyed Assyrian hopes that the upcoming Iraqi census would be the first true accounting of Assyrians in the modern history of Iraq.

...now why would Iraq be interested in Christians who`re long gone from Iraq? Does the United States send people knocking on doors in Spain to find out American citizens? If the purpose of a census is to record every member of a nation living anywhere in the world, then fine...they would be derelict in only counting those at home. That isn`t the purpose of the Iraqi census...it is YOU who want YOU to count no matter where you are in the world. And YOU aren`t the Iraqi government...because you build your castles in the air, is it our fault the plumbing doesn`t work?

In a major blow to Assyrian aspirations for full and comprehensive participation in the new government of Iraq,

...those citrizens of Iraq who live IN Iraq will decide the government policy. It`s a democracy remember? In no Democracy does the majority bow to any minority...what you are craving is mnority rule.

however, reports have surfaced that the upcoming Iraqi census will exclude Iraqi expatriates. The new census is tentatively planned to be carried out in one day by an army of school teachers on October 12. Presumably, due to logistical difficulties, the nearly 4 million estimated Iraqi expatriates scattered throughout the world will be deliberately excluded.

..of course they will be. What ever led you suspect otherwise?

Assyrians (also known as Chaldeans and Syriacs) are the indigenous Christian people of Iraq and have a continuous history in Iraq spanning over 6700 years.

...you can`t be "indigenous" Christians...Christianity is indigenous to Israel. Go get included in their census you`re so upset. You are the "Christians" of Iraq...period. You are NOT indigenous for BEING Christian. Sheesh!

During the past Baathist regime, Assyrians were denied recognition as a people in official censuses.

...that`s because no one but you loons accepts that you ARE Assyrians. Your fantasies and the agenda of your churches are NOT binding on sane people. You are Iraqis..and as such received the same rights. What you got..and asked for, that WAS special was directed at your village churches where your priests were teaching sedition in the language of Christ...and of course those of you who persisted in believing this foolishness and speaking out about got exactly the "special right" the Native Americans earned for themselves when THEY tried to put forward far more legitimate claims than you ever had to their indigenous lands...they got jailed and killed. That`s the SPECIAL attention criminals will get in any country.

Over 200 Assyrian villages were razed by the government in an attempt to resettle Assyrians into urban areas where they could be more easily Arabized.

...there are no Arabs in Iraq...there are Iraqis. You were moved around in the same tradition of our ancestors when confronted by unruly oafs. You were scattered among the larger population in order to improve you...those of you yearning for goat shit never got over it. It may not have been to your liking..but in Waco, Texas the United States also was confronted with a group making extra-legal claims..they killed them all and resettled them to the cemetary. Want to move again?

Following the first Gulf War, Assyrians in the northern UN administered "Safe Haven" did not fare better. Here as well, Assyrians were denied recognition as a people, referred to instead as "Christian Kurds." Moreover, over 50 villages were occupied in whole or in part by Kurds with ties to the ##### Democratic Party (KDP).

...the entire United States of America was made by having non-indigenous Europeans move onto Native lands and raze their villages and children...yet when American Natives agitated for a return of what was rightfully theirs, they were jailed and killed and got nothing. What is so unusual in all this for you? You live on those stolen lands..would you ever give your house "back". Quit yer bitching will you...no one is going to do a damn thing about it...the Kurds are merely following the footsteps of the original founders of America..they are stealing lands and making the thefts lergitimate by KEEPING them...it`s the way of the world bub.

A deliberate policy to exclude Iraqis in the Diaspora from the census has a disproportionately adverse affect on Assyrian population statistics at a very critical time in the lead up to general elections.

...tell Florida voters about it.

Although hard figures are difficult to quote since previous censuses deliberately excluded Assyrians, it is widely believed that 30-40% of Assyrians have emigrated out of Iraq since the 1970's.

...Gee....I wonder why?

As an example, in the US it is estimated that 80-90% of Iraqi Americans are Assyrian.

..they are not. They are Christians trying to get somewhere on the Heritage we share with all the people of BetNahrain by claiming exclusivity...because of a JEW religion born in ISRAEL of all things...being THAT stupid is no genetic marker either...what you have are village Christians trying to get a leg up on city dwellers who learned better long ago.

According to one analyst, "For Assyrians, losing 30-40% of their numbers prior to the establishment of the National Assembly is a potential disaster.

...you are NOT Assyrians. You are scoundrels..something th world KNOWS Christian can be, in great numbers, already. You are NOT Assyrians.

The first National Assembly will establish the first basic principles from which a new Iraqi society and government will emerge. If we are shut out in the early stages, it will be an uphill battle to regain full participation."

...you will never get "special rights"...even if you WERE what you say you are...you would still be a minority any way you cut it and a despised religion more and more...shut up...pray in your toilet and get on with your CIVIC life..get a bar of soap...get a job...take care of your families, like Sidurri said..and leave off trying to impress us all by wearing borowed clothes..you are NOT Assyrians.

The reasons for the overwhelmingly lop-sided representation in the Diaspora are numerous but, in the words of an observer, "boil down to disproportionate persecution leading to disproportionate emigration."

...hey Jassim...will you quit referring to yourself as an "observer"...you are a Putz...can you get nothing right?

The proposed exclusion of Iraqi expatriates impacts Iraqis from across the religious and ethnic spectrum. However, no community is impacted to the same extent as Assyrian Christians. As one Assyrian political leader noted, "It would be inconceivable and downright dangerous for the government to virtually erase the existence of 30-40% of Shiites, Sunnis, or Kurds. But, for Assyrians, this is the reality of the government census proposal."

...any Iraqi citizen living in Iraq can participate...period...end of story. Those of you thrown out...or with the good sense to leave...whose claims to indigenous crap were never appreciated by Iraq will not find a back door back in to do your old dirt EVER AGAIN. You are gone and good riddance too. Iraqis face enough hardships without having you back among them boring the neighbors with claims of being the direct descendants of Ashurbanipal, "because, LOOK...we are CHRISTIANS"! I mean REALLY!!!

Assyrians are keenly aware of the delicate situation surrounding the nascent Iraqi government. Assyrians, perhaps more than any other group, are heavily invested in the prospects for a better, more democratic Iraq.

...Man you sure know all the wrong things to say at the right time. An UNDEMOCRATICALLY thug of a president seized power in America and got YOUR blessings for it..and you STILL want to talk about bringing your "special" democracy to Iraq? Are you nuts?

With a violent insurgency and isolation from surrounding regimes afraid of democratic progress, Assyrians are loathe to contribute to a further weakening or condemnation of the government.

...I agree...you have done enough.

However, as one activist noted, "at some point we have to ask what indeed are we supporting? If there is a policy whose outcome is the undercounting of our people, then it is democracy itself that is under attack. We cannot support such a policy."

...you always found something to use as an excuse NOt to support Iraq...and they know it and want you gone..they sure as hell don`t to hear from those they threw out..and for good reason too. You will never get what your church taught you is yours by right of your being CHRISTIANS...and it IS for that religion for you base your entire claim to being "Assyrian" on being CHRISTIAN...they know that what you are really doing is demanding special rights for your RELIGION and they will never give you that..use all the high toned words you want...they know the truth.

Various suggestions have been proposed to alleviate the disproportionate impact on Assyrians. One such suggestion has been to establish Consulates in major urban areas in Europe and North America where sizeable Iraqi communities exist. As one analyst suggested "Although they may not be able to send out school teachers to every home in the Diaspora, at least those Iraqis who want to be counted would have that option. The government could follow up the process with a full accounting in later months." Such a good faith effort would help to lessen the impact on the Assyrian population and send a clear signal to the community that there is not a deliberate intention to undermine the Assyrian community's numbers.

...there is none. It is YOUR claim...for which you then propose a "remedy". Blacks in America can complain all they want to...does them no good either. The majority rules in a democracy...Hitelr was democratically voted into office and there too, a religious minority could do nothing about it..as Muslim Americans can`t change Christian government policy. Your foolish words fool your foolish constituency...which is your purpose...your goal is to drive away all reasonable and sane Assyrin Christians to replace them with a mob of fanatics.

...it has NEVER been the practice in any democracy to grant special consideration to minorities...what are you talking about?

In the US, for example, a minimal effort of establishing Consulates in San Diego, San Jose, Chicago, Detroit, and New York would help to reach the major concentrations of Iraqi Americans. The personnel associated with these Consulates naturally would need to be representative of the make up of the communities in those areas.

...I think you like the sound of your own voice...more than you like saying anything sensible. If Iraq cooses to exclude expats for the purposes of THIS kind of census...you have no standing anywhere to demand anything..of course you can complain...it`s a democracy and you`re allowed to complain.
