Free speech touted at Bush event but applied to pro-Bush speech only
by Brendan Coyne (bio)

Jul 14 - A Texas couple wearing anti-Bush t-shirts was handcuffed and removed from a Fourth of July Bush-Cheney campaign rally in Charleston, West Virginia.

The Bush speech, given after the two, Nicole and Jeff Rank, were arrested, included a proclamation that "on this Fourth of July, we confirm our love of freedom, the freedom for people to speak their minds, the freedom for people to worship as they so choose." The president added, "Free thought, free expression, that's what we believe."

According to radio news program Democracy Now!, police approached the Ranks and asked them to move from the rally area to a protest zone, an order they refused as both had tickets to the event. The two were then handcuffed and charged with trespassing. The Ranks are from Corpus Christi, Texas, and Nicole Rank, a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employee, was working on an environmental clean-up project in the area.

Niki Edwards, spokeswoman for FEMA's region III offices, which covers the West Virginia office Nicole Rank was working from, told The NewStandard Rank is a temporary employee who is deployed to emergency areas as needed.

When asked if Rank was taken off active employment status due to being arrested at the Bush rally, Edwards said, "What I can say is she was released from active duty for being arrested for violating a lawful order from the West Virginia police." If a FEMA employee working in the field is arrested, they are immediately dismissed from active duty until the matter is taken care of, Edwards added.
