88-year-old jailed for molesting granddaughters December 23, 2004 An 88-year-old man from Northern Tasmania has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for sexually abusing his three granddaughters. The man, who cannot be named, abused the girls between 1970 and 1982 when they were between three and nine years old. He was found guilty of three counts of maintaining a sexual relationship with a person under the age of 17 and sentenced in the Launceston Supreme Court. The man, who will be 90 years old when eligible for parole in 21 months, stumbled from the dock as he was led away and was steadied by a policeman. Justice Ewan Crawford condemned the man's actions when handing down the sentence. "You let your grandchildren down terribly," he said. "You have shown no contrition. "Their contempt for you is justified and their efforts to have you brought to justice is to be admired." Justice Crawford said the offences were opportunistic and occurred in his home, at the girls' homes, in cars or wherever they happened to be at his mercy. "Some of your offending was committed surreptitiously in the presence of other members of your extended family," Justice Crawford said. "It included inappropriate touching of girls under a table when you were dining or playing cards and when they were sitting on your lap. "Some were committed in the presence of your wife, including when you were in bed and had a girl touch your penis under the bedclothes." Justice Crawford said the man had been married for 63 years and a prison sentence would cause particular hardship because of his age and declining health. "But nevertheless the court's sentence must be adequate punishment for your crimes and one of general deterrence and retribution."
