...this applies in religion as well....for decades before Luther split with the Church there had been repeated calls to reform the most flagrant abuses in Church practises...all of it was ignored...the Protestants came into being only when the church refused to listen to mild suggestions that would only have strengthened it had they been heeded.

...As much as the whole world knows about the French Revolution, you hardly ever hear about the British One that happened 150 years earlier and made no big splash. 150 years before the French rose up to demand a voice in government and chopped off the head of their king, the English had done the same.

That it didn't turn into the awful bloodbath of the French Revolution can be attributed in part to national temperment but also to Magna Charta 300 years before. The tragedy of the Bourbons was that the aristocracy of France tied their fortunes to the king and, with no one opposing him, they all went down together,...whereas the English took their king to task centuries before and imposed a mild form of representative government on an absolute monarch...but the old ways returned, Charles I would not consult with his parliament, made up of the nobility, it's true, but it was a start...and so he had his head chopped off and England became a Commonwealth...there was hell to pay of course, with Cromwell becomming all the tyrant anyone wanted...but out of it came stronger parliamentary rule and checks on the monarch's absolute power...France had no such luck and went one applying the screws to its people, by king AND nobility until the inevitable explosion did away with all of them and a lot of innocent people besides...brought Napoleon to power which then alarmed all the other absolute monarchs and Europe bled for years and years...all because modest suggestions and modest proposals were so easy to ignore.
