Shushan is concerned over womenīs rights in Iraq...and for good reason...but this isue too is being perverted. Most of the ills if not all that she fears were all a part of American democracy since the beginning...yet who would have called America a "false" democracy?

If Iraq has Islamic Sharia law on women, esp christian, then its no democracy

What kind of democracy will Iraq have if women, especially nonmuslim women like the Christian women in IRaq, are required to follow Islamic law?

This article below is worried about Islamic women in Iraq having to follow islamic Sharia law including wearing hijab, allowing men to beat their wives, no divorce rights for women, multiple wives allowed, etc. etc.. apparantly the Iranian Shiites are having an influence with the IRaqi Shiites who have majority seats in new government and are trying to make Islamic law part of the new Iraqi constitution.

...Read the history of the Womenīs Sufferage Movement...or Margaret Sangerīs ordeal in trying to educate women...or the Labor Movement among women seamstresses and how all of them were beaten, jailed, humiliated and force-fed when they went on hunger strikes in protest...women in America were also denied the right own property...vote...hold any kind of political office and they were barred from attending schools of higher education, they were condemned for wearing manly clothing or smoking in public...they had to fight like crazy for every single freedom and right they have today...yet who would say America was NOT a democratic nation since its founding..even WITH slaves and the trade in human bodies?

Letīs calm down and get off the walls and ceilings...Iraq like any other sovereign nation..like the United States itself, has a right to grow and develop at its own pace..letīs remember our own dismal beginnings and not get so self-righteous...and if we care...if we are worried about democracy and freedom in Iraq and elsewhere, letīs help them and not make things worse...which is all weīve managed to do and all we set OUT to do.

What happned to one person one vote? Where in our democracy did it say anything about nine old farts deciding the election in a hurry? Why?

One last thing, up till the 1960s a husbandīs word was all that was needed to lock his wife up in a mental institution...because she was refusing to do her "natural womanly" functions. And letīs not forget how often rape was allowed in marriage...and how often men were "allowed" to beat their wives...these things didnīt change because MEN changed them and they didnīt change because Sweeden attacked America and forced the change..they happened because oppressed American women fought BACK, even when the legislatures, courts and police opposed them...who are we to get upitty?
