Imperialism is a broad stroke and speaks of past history. Long gone is the occupation of another land, but just as effective is the changing of it's government, troop occupation, or siding with one side against another in a civil war, and toppling legitimately-elected governments. We are guilty of all of the above. I will state the countries that we have done one or all of the above, starting in 1950. 1950--Korea--intervebned in a civil war. They are still divided 56 years later. 1958--Lebanon--and recently just in the news again with one of our "allies" invading it. 1960--Laos--we interved covertly in civil war. In process of completing demarcation with Thailand, Thai's PM just ousted yesterday. 1964--Vietnam--intervened in civil war. Still divided 31 years later. 1965--Dominican Republic--intervened in civil war 1970--Camodia--intervened covertly until 1975 in civil war. 1980--sided with Iraq against Iran 1982--Lebanon--again we visited 1983--Grenada--we invaded 1987--we sent fleet to Persian Gulf to protect oil, this time from Iranians 1989--Panama--we invaded 1991--Desert Storm--we invaded Iraq in response to Iraq invading Kuwait for illegally slant drilling Iraqi oil fields. We maintain a no fly zone till 2003. 1992--Somalia--Intervened in civil war 1994--Haiti--Invaded and we still maintain troops there. 1995--Bosnia--intervened in civil war 1999--Kosovo--intervened in civil war 2001--Afghanistan--invaded and still fighting there 2003--Iraq--Invaded on false charges from Bush administration, concerning stockpiling of WMDs 2004--Haiti--we intervened again. It is hard to believe that one country could have fought so many wars. If I had counted all the revolts and small skirmishes there would have been so many more. It seems that we are always at war. Maybe it is time to rethink our policies? 60% think the Democrats are just as bad as the Neo-Cons. What does that tell you about the state of politics in America? --------------------- |
