Dear Ms Morgan,

I do wish you people would do a little more research. I too was born "Assyrian". In Iraq. In fact, I`m so much of an "Assyrian" that I built the first Assyrian public monument anywhere in the world in the last 2500 years. The bronze monument of Ashurbanipal stands at Civic Center in San Francisco. Therefore I think I know what I am speaking of.

If you`ll look only a little deeper you`ll see, not Assyrians first, but Christians. Assyrians, you see, converted to more than just Christianity. The majority of them in fact converted to Islam and then went on to build yet another great empire in that region: the Great Islamic Empire, the most advanced of its day, and located at Baghdad.

Iraq today is being torn internally by religious disputes. Adding to the chaos is the Christian minority`s claim that they and only they are the legitimate Assyrian descendants. They are not. Muslim Assyrians in Iraq are by far the majority. They recognize and are very proud of their ancient roots, but they have 1400 additional years of history as Muslims, with many many accomplishments to their name. The Christian Assyrians never got over being the minority. What they claim as "Assyrian" is really merely Christian. Their religious zealotry has caused much dissension and misery to both themselves and Muslim Assyrians.

They also claim that Iraq belongs to them, because they and only they are the indigenous people of that region. And if you ask them why that is, they will again say, "because "we are the Christians". Christianity is no more indigenous to Mesopotamia than Islam. Both of them were brought into the region, therefore it hardly makes sense for Christians to claim they are "indigenous" simply because of their religion. Christianity may have come to the region first, but it was displaced by Islam, which has grown into the dominant religion of that region. Christian Assyrians are angry at being marginalized, and these claims of their`s to being the ONLY Assyrians allowable stems from this.

Thank You,

Farid Parhad
