Upon entering Cuba we have entered not just a different place but a different time as well. The year is 1959 and decadent monuments of Spanish opulance stand eroding on the cobbled streets of the Old Havana district. Buicks and Cadillacs decked in rusting chrome and tail fins cruise down the main thoroughfare. Everywhere we go there is the beautiful SPanish colonial architecture, in some places being restored in others literally crumbling and eroding around its inhabitants. The most notable thing about Havana is not just the architecture. It's the mellow police who greet you with a Beunos Dias and who have yet to ask to see our ID. Telling them I'm an Assyrian from Iraq goes down very well here. It's usually followed by the words, "Bastard Bush," refering to the US invasion and occupation of our homeland. An old barometer used in coal mines to assess the quality of the air was the canary, in Havana I have chosen to use the canine. Forget man made barriers such as black and white, male and female, gay and straight. Here in Havana dogs lie down in the middle with the knowledge that the inhabitants will drive around them and not hurt or harrass them as they slumber. Havana is indeed Paradiso in some regards. I will try and keep you guys further updated with photos and pictures when I land in Jamaica. In the words of Che Guevara, Hasta La Victoria Siempre, Tiglath Havana, Cuba --------------------- |
