A family friend was telling me a story recently, which was relayed to him by his father, years ago. In the Chaldean village (I'm assuming it's Tel-keppeh), a man was cleaning out the chechma, (which was the pit where sewage was stored under an out-house, due to the lack of plumbing in the village), when he said the following to himself: ܒܸܫܬܘܿ ܐܵܬܼ ܫܘܼܠܲܐ ܘ ܠܲܐ ܫܘܼܠܲܐ ܒܸܫ ܥܲܡ (bishto aath shoola oo la shoola bish 'am) Translation: There is no better job than this A man, walking by, overheard him say this and asked the man who was cleaning out the raw sewage from the chechma: ܡܵܐ ܫܘܼܠܲܐ ܠܲܐ ܐܝܼܬܼܲܢ ܒܸܫ ܥܲܡ؟ (maa shoola la eeythan bish 'am?) Literal Translation: What work isn't better than this? Translation: What the hell do you mean there is no better work than cleaning up shit? And the man responded... ܦܠܵܟܼܲܐ ܬܲܐ ܢܵܫܸܐ (plakha taa nashi) Literal Translation: Working for others So, the moral of the story is: It is better to clean up shit (working for yourself) than to work for others. This story (which is true, by the way), seems to encapsulate the general entreprenurial spirit that most Chaldeans have. There are very few Chaldeans who do not own their own businesses. They can be found in every sector of the economy in Michigan. Hope all is well with you folks. --------------------- |
