Maggie, I live very near Laurie's. Although I have occasion to miss the Northern California landscape- the ocean, the Bay, driving/walking/running across Golden Gate Bridge, Stinson Beach, Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Berkeley, Mt. Tamalpais- I was never able to feel at home in Marin. It was just so White, so Exclusive. Chicago welcomes me. I can be just another darkie here and no one will ask where I'm from, or what my accent is? Accent? I never knew I had one! I LOVE this city. The people are friendly, funny, tough, yet polite. Walking my dog in my neighborhood is like mingling at a party- so many hellos, waves across the street, stops to let the dogs play while we converse, laughter. Andersonville is like a little piece of Shangri-la. A mixture of ethnicities, lifestyles, race, and class. Good stuff. --------------------- |
