...there`s something so fitting in an American vice president, especially one as hawkish as Cheney, shooting a friend while engaged in the manly sport of killing birds...well, quail...which CAN be ferocious sometimes.

...Why do you need to kill a bird these days...when the cooler at any supermarket already has several bird corpses ready and waiting? Do you NEED to kill your own? Is it REALLY a "hunter mentality"...or just a thwarted killer`s instinct..and a cowardly one at that? Where`s the challenge...where`s the excitement of the hunt in killing a bird?

..I remember a year spent in Portugal, on the southern coast, the Algarve...which was still rather primitive...on weekends I`d see bands of men with bandoleros and shotguns..all very expensive looking...out for a day`s hunting...from the way they were outfitted you`d think a herd of elephants was on the rampage somewhere nearby..or at least several lions...turned out all that firepower and martial bullshit was brought to bear on rabbits...on Bugs Bunny and the Easter Bunny...these guys were hunting CARTOONS and became, themselves, rather cartoonish in the process.

What could have possessed Cheney to be so trigger happy? It`s one thing to be out hunting rhinos or wild boar and mistake a movement in the brush with such a wild animal...but a quail? How do you mistake a bird for a 70 year old friend of your`s? And why so anxious to shoot at anything that moves? It`s not like Cheney was in Iraq hunting Iraqi children...who might indeed pose a threat so that any movement anywhere could be construed as an enemy combatant..but a quail? Out hunting birds, what in god`s name could Cheney be AFRAID of? Why would he be so worked up, so taunt and wired that he`d jump at any movement and blast away?

It`s a fitting metaphor for the entire "war" in Iraq...a war on civilians and children who`ve been made into "enemies"...but were no more than sitting ducks...till they decided to fight for their freedom and integrity...something the birds couldn`t do...till Hitchcock showed them the way.
