I attended the passing of a relative a couple of months ago. As I stood-up, sat-down, stood-up, sat-down in church (Yes I attended church. The holy water began to boil and the Madonna wept) watching the procession and thought of the purpose of church and/or religion. I remembered reading about the Neanderthal tombs found in the caves of Northern Iraq. As they excavated these caves, they found organized Neanderthal bones along with pollen. The Neanderthals memorialized their dead by throwing flowers in their graves. This in my opinion was the dawn of religion. It was the first time human-likes could conscientiously question their destiny and tried to cope with their loss. Religion is all about death, whether it's causing death or being used to cope after death. In my experience, I have noticed that people flock to religion to find the answered to the passing of a loved one. And all they find is ritual and mythology. It seems to give them a temporary answer and a false sense of closure. Consider Christianity. The focus was the crucifixion of Jesus, his rise and his return. The plot thickens when he dies. For the vast majority, they don't even know what happens before or after. Oh wait! They only other stories they remember are ones Charlton Heston (You know the born-again Christian and president of NRA) played in. Even the bishops of the Assyrians church say, "Read, only the Book of Matte." I wonder why. I guess the point of my post is my own personal epiphany. That necessity is the mother of invention. At a time when we needed an answer to that question, we improvised. I am just wondering what will happen when we can mathematically calculate what happens after death or scientifically prove it. Will religion wage a holy war on science? Hasn't it already? Your thoughts! (Farid, you may have touched on these numerous times.) --------------------- |
