...not John Wayne...not Ronald Raygun...I was at the ranch watching the guys work...the primitive wisdom of their techniques never ceases to fascinate...when a fella rode up on a horse that was not Trigger...not by a long shot. It was black, but that was all. The vaquero didn`t have a baseball cap on, thank Ashur, but a regulation and well worn and stained cowboy hat...I would have prefered a sombrero, but I was too charmed to care.

The whole wild west thing was a Hollywood invention...real cowboys seldom carried rifles and hardly ever pistols. They WORKED. This fellow did have on a typical shirt..not a T shirt but a real one, wth cuffs and collar...faded, but clean...washed and ironed many times by his wife. He rode easy in the saddle but errect...he had the lovliest leather chaps I`ve eever seen...a faded buff, butter, color...no silver conchas...no gee-gaws...nothing like the ones GM wears. His stirrups were covered over in tough leather, protecting the tips of his boots...they have some really nasty kinds of cactus down here...the chaps are for real..not for show...riding after cattle through the chapparal can get you stuck more times than Jesus was.

Thankfully there was a lariat tied to his saddle and saddlebags too...also hanging from the wide horn was a machette in a worn leater case...a machette is one step away from a cavalry sabre and can be very deadly. A one eyed dog, really, walked respectfully back and away from the horse.

And he was such a gentleman...greeted us formally...tipped his hat and asked pardon...said he was looking for some strays...they raise a lot of cattle down here and some of the really big haciendas still exist...there are fences, but not everywhere so cattle sometimes roam far from home...it`s an unwritten law that you can "trespass" anywhere so long as you`re looking for cattle...and rustling is STILL a hanging offense...no trial, no nuthin...just a rope round your neck. All of the cowboy lore, the details and acoutrements came from Mexico...not New York.

I said we hadn`t seen any and so he thanked us, wheeeled about and cantered off...he was a handsome fellow...handlebar mustche, not for effect...it`s just the way its worn, sunburnt, rugged face, soft eyes...his boots were ravaged, no spurs necessary...the hindquarters of his horse jagged up and down as he went down the dirt trail...I watched him ride off and thought of another horse`s ass...I love Mexico.
