Iraq loses its most valuable treasure! Assyrianblog Exclusive News When the Baghdad Museum was looted after the US backed invasion in 2003 one man became the face of an emotional effort to recover history. Dr. Donny George was the head of the Baghdad Museum and spoke openly to western media sources urging an international effort to have the artifacts returned. Dr. George, an Assyrian Archealogist born in Iraq, worked tirelessly touring the world lecturing academics about the importance of Iraqi artifacts. Assyrianblog sources can confirm that Dr. George has recently resigned as the head of the Baghdad Museum. Out of desperation he fled Iraq due to safety concerns for himself and his family, despite living there all his life. His move is part of a growing trend amongst academic Iraqis, particularly Christians, to flee the war torn country since their safety cannot be guaranteed. The resignation of Dr. George has been cited by many academics as one of the biggest losses the Baghdad Museum has suffered so far. Dr. George was one of Iraqis longest serving Archaeologists and recognised around the world by many for his brilliant exhibitions. Most of the artifacts stolen after the invasion have been recovered and stored in safe locations until security is restored in Iraq. Dr. George however is unlikely to return anytime soon. Since leaving Iraq he has been offered numerous positions in institutions around the world. He is believed to have accepted a role with a US based university and is currently planning to migrate there. Assyrianblog wishes Donny George all the best in his future work. Assyrians around the world are proud of his accomplishments within an environment only few have managed to survive in. You can add your comments below. Assyrianblog is planning to hold an exclusive interview with Dr. George in the near future. --------------------- |
