Upon entering Jamaica, we were in love with it and its people straight away. In Cuba everyone was trying to sell us black market Cuban cigars. "Hey Italiano do you want cigars?" they'd ask. Mumma Mia, for some reason they kept thinking we were Italian! In Jamaica it's very similar only the product being sold is different. Here it's Canja. Everywhere we went we heard the sentence, "Do you want Canja mon?" For the first couple of days I thought that Canja mon was some type of Jamaican super hero who wears a J under his shirt and helps Jamaican old ladies cross a street ....or something. Only later did I realise that it was Marijuanna. Anyway the first day of being offered Canja is fine and dandy, but after 5 days of being offered Canja by every Jamaican you meet it starts to wear very thin. I took to the practice of asking them for Camomille tea instead when asked for Canja to which they usually looked stumped and bewilderd! As we walked along the beach in Jamaica, there were little shops, restaurants, and Reggae music was playing all night, and not to mention every guy trying to sell you - you guessed it - Canja (marijuana). Every guy brags about how he's the biggest drug lord/baron on the beach, running the entire show. After we reject their offer to buy Canja, they go from being the Kingpin from the Carlie cartel to begging for our loose change in order to buy a beer. Oh how the mighty have fallen. The dogs in Jamaica also act as barometers of the atmosphere. Here they are either as as slow as their owners or as hyperactive as one dog was we saw jumping up off all 4 of his legs.
