..it's his career...he has every right to conduct it as he wishes...and going mainstream could increase his appeal...and get his humorous digs out there....but it's like being famous for the way you tap dance...being invited to a larger venue because of your tap dancing abilities..and then agreeing NOT to tap dance.

Stewart muzzled hisself...by accepting the Academy gig he sold them his reputation...his entire shtick. He's welcome to do it...but it was an embarrassmanet as far as what he built his notariety on. Not knowing Stewart from anywhere, you'd have been hard put to it to explain just what he became famous for...if all you did was watch him last night at the Oscar's.

George Clooney...who has NOT built a career on slamming this administration, levelled the best dig at the neo-con bullshitters who see attacks against THEM everywhere...he reminded everyone that Hollywood has often tackled issues the rest of the country later caught onto...that goes for racism, for anti-Jewishness...for unjust wars and official scumminess. It was a good impromptu defense of what Hollywood CAN do and has done in the past...had far more bite to it than anything Stewart managed to squeeze out.
