I. Letter Dear All, I. Newsweek Publishes Assyria on Map! Forget Fareed - he wants to see Iraq become another Iran. The most important part is the map which shows a clear, if small `Assyria`. Here it is! www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15513332/site/newsweek/ II. The formal Request For An Assyrian Province The Formal Request For An Assyrian Province has been delivered to the Iraqi Government who signed for it and is currently winding its way through the Government. After a week of negotiations the Iraqi Ambassador said `Good job! The talk of the Iraqi Delegation was the request of the Assyrians for a province.` The US Ambassador to Iraq said `Congratulations! I will do all I can to help advance this along. I will assign a staff member to help you on this.` The Iraqi Foreign Minister `Great! I read it completely. It is what we asked you to turn in last year! We will take it from here.` Senator Rick Santorum `This is great news! You made my day` (He is running for re-election and has a lot of bad news these days) Senator Sam Brownback `This is wonderful! What can we do to help?` Senator Joseph Biden , Chair, Foreign Relations Committee `Are you sure? If this is true, it is wonderful! Get with my staff and lets work on it together.` Senator Joe Lugar, Chair, Foreign Relations Committee `I really do not want to see Iraq break up, but I think you are right, this is the only way forward. We will do all we can to help ensure this goes through.` Iraqi Government Staff `Give us some time - it will take a couple months to get this through the system, but we are on it. Keep in touch.` Rev. Robert Schuler `That is wonderful news! How can the Church help?` Former President Bill Clinton `Really? Is it true? That is great! How can we help? That will really make a big difference.` Laura Bush `That is wonderful news! What can we do to help?` The next step begins in mid November, with the introduction of a Congressional Resolution to Support The Assyrian Province. III. The `Culture Of Failure`! Don’t listen to those who love the `Culture Of Failure` Don’t listen to the naysayer's who prefer the comfortable easy life of the `martyr`. They say `The Americans will be just like the British. They do not care for us. They will abandon us in the end` or `we cant believe they would agree to that` or `even if they say that they will never give us a province`. Even worse are those who say that the only way forward is to become part of Kurdistan. If God himself came and offered us a country they would argue that they needed it in writing! They enjoy the life of fighting a battle they do not really want to win. It is comfortable attending conferences, meetings and always being able to talk about the `poor Assyrians` which to them is just a side hobby. Success would mean they would have to give up their `hobby`, have to actually accomplish something and leave their comfortable homes and businesses and actually get something done. It is hard work! For those who have lived in Iraq, we all know that the Iraqis love the Assyrians! Every Iraqi Government office or business of significance will have Assyrians as they are trusted. We have gotten nearly every member of the Iraqi Cabinet to say on Al Iraqia TV `The Assyrians are the original people of Iraq, this is their country. Whatever they need to remain in the country we will do` The Iraqi Government is desperate to keep the `brain drain` and truly does want to do all needed to keep the Assyrians in the country. IV. Never Give Up! As Winston Churchill said when invited to speak at Harrow. `Never give up! Never! Never! Never! Don’t settle for `crumbs` when the way has been opened or it all! Don’t let those who promote a `culture of failure` promote their brand of `nothing good will ever happen to us.` Don’t let `leaders` of the `Culture of Failure` say that once again it will be failure! What kind leadership promotes failure? An Assyrian Province will be a reality! It is on its way! Never give up! Never! Never! Never! Ken Joseph Jr. II. The Article Good News From New York! New York The annual opening of the United Nations in New York is known, often more for the various side meetings taking place between countries than the actual proceedings themselves. Many historic meetings and agreements have gone forward between sessions of this once in a year event when world leaders converge on New York. While this year it was mostly Venezuela and Iran that stole the headlines with their eye catching hoopla, in fact what may prove to be an even more important event took place quietly while attention was elsewhere? On the side of the UN General Assembly meetings this year, one such historic event did take place, albeit quietly. The Assyrian Christians, the original inhabitants of Iraq made a formal request to the Iraqi Government for a province in their ancestral homeland in Northern Iraq as provided for under the Iraqi Constitution. A formal letter from `The Assyrian Nation` was presented to the Iraqi President and Iraqi Foreign Minister. It was the Foreign Minister and the Prime Minister who had earlier said in public `The Assyrians are the original people of Iraq. Iraq is their country. Whatever they need to remain in Iraq we will do. They are entitled under the Constitution to a Province of their own and should formally request one. ` What is significant about this event is that while the bad news from Iraq gains the headlines, in fact the Northern part of Iraq – Assyria and Kurdistan are doing extremely well. A world apart from the desert of the south, Northern Iraq, the homeland of the Assyrian Christians is in fact green, mountainous and very prosperous. Nearly 100,000 Assyrian Christians have left the country since Liberation, not so much out of fear of danger, but more concerned about the drift towards Iranian style islamic rule that has for all practical purposes taken over the south of Iran. A prominent Iraqi said on the condition that she would not be identified `I was asked to run for Government office during the recent election but the condition was that I wear a Hijab – or head covering. I am a proud woman. I refused. ` It is precisely this `creeping islamization` that is most worrying the educated class. `Before the war we all lived together – now the radical moslems are forcing us to all choose sides` said a University professor. `Nearly half of the women students now wear the veil. It is very sad. ` Facing this reality, the Assyrian Christians have come to the conclusion that the only way they can remain in Iraq – their pre-war numbers were put at 2.5 million by the Iraqi Government – fully 10% of the country – is to have a province of their own where much like a US State or part of the United Kingdom they would be a part of Iraq, but still be able to manage their own affairs and not have to operate under the discriminatory moslem laws. `We feel this is a way forward` said one Assyrian official not willing to go on the record `While southern Iraq has failed for the most part and can be most honestly called a part of Iran, the North of Iraq is doing very, very well. If the historic request that has been made to the Iraqi Government, based on their request to do so can be implemented on the ground and an Assyrian Province can become a reality not only will draw back the hundreds of thousands who have left the country, but serve as a magnet for investment and safety to many others too. It will become the `Dubai` of Iraq.` Copies of the official request for a Province were provide to US Ambassador to Iraq, Undersecretary of State Burns and other officials and the Iraqi Foreign Minister commented `I have read the document completely`. A signed receipt was provided for the documents and Iraqi officials said `The next step is to wait for a formal response. ` Whether this historic event – the formal request for a Province as provided for under Iraqi law – can translate into a `Zone of Freedom` inside Iraq and cause at least the northern part of Iraq to succeed democratically and economically remains to be seen. The next step according to Assyrian officials is to have a Congressional Resolution passed by both houses of congress endorsing the request, followed by a similar resolution in the European Union, both of which are beginning shortly after the end of the opening of the UN General Assembly. `The Assyrians along with the vast majority of the `silent majority` of Iraqis are deeply grateful to the Americans for liberating Iraq` said one Assyrian official. `In addition to saying `thank you` to the families of those who have sacrificed so much so that Iraq could finally free, the next step is for us to step up to the plate and take charge of our own destiny. A province of our own where we do not have to live under islamic law and can practice our culture and values in freedom and succeed economically is the first step in our taking over our own future.` Skeptics wonder about the strength of the Iraqi government itself, while others point to the desperate situation of Iraq trying to do all it can to keep the best and brightest from leaving the country as the real reason behind their acceptance of an Assyrian province. However it goes, the Assyrian Christians – the first nation to accept Christianity and the only people on earth who still speak Aramaic the language of Jesus – are in the gamble of their lives. If it fails there will be a massive stream of Assyrian Christians to the US, Europe and Australia and a further reduction in the Christian Community in the Middle East which as gone from nearly 20% a generation ago to now under 2%. If it succeeds, though and an Assyrian Province can be established in the North of Iraq, some experts say there could be a massive return to the area, investment and some good news from Iraq for a change. Ken Joseph Jr. III. The request September 19, 2006 Republic of Iraq Baghdad, Iraq Dear Brothers, On behalf of the Assyrian nation worldwide and the minorities in Iraq, representatives of the Assyrian people would like to thank you for your hard work on behalf of our nation. We would like to take this opportunity to formally follow up on two public statements made by the Iraqi Government – one by the Prime Minister, the second by the Foreign Minister at two separate new conferences, during which the following statements were made, first on November 25 and then on December 6. `The Assyrians are the original people of Iraq. Iraq is their country. We will do all we can to make conditions in which they can be a vital part of Iraq. In particular according to the Constitution of Iraq the Assyrians as the Indigenous people of Iraq are entitled to at least one province in their homeland. The Assyrian Nation needs to make a formal request for this. ` Further, nearly every member of the Iraqi Cabinet made the same and or similar statements publicly at the regular Press Conference broadcast nationwide on Al Iraqia TV. Following up on these, we hereby make a formal request for at least one province based on the public request to do so from the Prime Ministers Office and Foreign Ministers Office and article 121 of the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq. We are confident that once the Province is implemented over 100,000 Assyrians who love their country and have had to leave will return and many more of the 3 Million Assyrians who live outside the country will return, invest, raise their families and work to build the new Iraq. As you know, many Assyrians have fled successive waves of persecution in Iraq, notably the Ottoman Empire’s massacre of tens of thousands of them from 1850 to 1925, the Iraqi Governments killing of 3,000 Assyrians in 1933 and the disappearance of 1,000 Assyrians during the `Anfal` campaign of the 1980s. These Assyrians have not been able to resettle in other countries in many instances, often dying in border crossings, being dined entry, or suffering the disabilities of illegal immigrant status. They all look forward to returning to a province set aside for them as proclaimed. We look forward to receiving your formal response and look forward to building a New Iraq with you and all the Iraqi People. Sincerely, The Assyrian Nation --------------------- |
