People who really care about their people and humanity do, like Mahmoud Darwish has done, who for many years chose to live for many years under siege, in order to express and record through poetry the suffering of his people. Does the Chaldean, Assyrian, Syriac, nation have one Mahmoud Darwish? If so, maybe he or she should get published. I have a wave that sea-gulls snatched away. I have a view of my own and an extra blade of grass. I have a moon past the peak of words. I have the godsent food of birds and olive tree beyond the ken of time. I have traversed the land before swords turned bodies into banquets. I come from there. I return the sky to its mother when for its mother the sky cries, and I weep for a returning cloud to know me. I have learned the words of blood-stained courts in order to break the rules. I have learned and dismantled all the words to construct a single one: Home The Deluge and the Tree By: Mahmoud Darwish When the hurricane swirled and spread its deluge of dark evil onto the good green land 'they' gloated. The western skies reverberated with joyous accounts: "The Tree has fallen ! The great trunk is smashed! The hurricane leaves no life in the Tree!" Had the Tree really fallen? Never! Not with our red streams flowing forever, not while the wine of our thorn limbs fed the thirsty roots, Arab roots alive tunneling deep, deep, into the land! When the Tree rises up, the branches shall flourish green and fresh in the sun the laughter of the Tree shall leaf beneath the sun and birds shall return Undoubtedly, the birds shall return.
