Although I have never watched Maggie's show I have come to admire her from her postings here on Inside Assyria. As far as I'm concerned- whatever her personal and political leanings- she lives not only in the Turlock/Modesto Assyrian trenches, she also hosts a show that seems to engage people in dialogue that would otherwise go unhad, giving some voice to otherwise meek Assyrian settlers in Stanislaus County!!! Tell me anyone else would have the courage to do the same. And for SEVEN years?! Not I. Wow! An intelligent, passionate, articulate, proactive Assyrian woman who dares to be right in the middle of it all without apologies, sharing her experience here with us, and certainly having a sense of humor about herself- which I think many ultrasensitive Assyrians lack, thus unable to engage in sober debates without becoming instantly emotional and religiously hysterical...(Myself included, I admit) Maggie, thanks for your hard work out there in the trenches. I know it cannot be easy. Itlee raba eeghara ghatakh. I should say "ghatokhoon". Also, Maggie, you mentioned in one of your responses to Tony concerning Kanno (?) that working from within the system, any system, is most effective, otherwise one becomes and remains an ineffectual pariah of sorts. I'm not quoting directly here. But I was most struck by this as a queer Assyrian diarist who has found great freedom and space "outside" the Assyrian system. You really struck a chord here as I continue to occassionally question my self-imposed estrangement from "the community". I agree with you; I do think anyone who lives very near, or within the scrutinizing eye of the Assyrian community- the Stanislaus County sect in this case- most likely has the most direct effect, even if in small, patient, resilient doses, as you mention. After all, it's all very accessible and immediate to you, as are the blows, no doubt. I admire the courageous choices you have had to make in life, whatever they may be, I know a woman as accessible as you, as engaged and available to partake in open discussion has had her share of hardships, AND processed them well. Congratulations, Maggie. I think now more than ever it is so urgently valuable that we openly and non-combatively voice our experiences, ideas, values, concerns, and differences in a hopeful attempt to UPDATE our culture. So much has happened since Babylon, so much to catch up on, so many generations and variations of ideologies, views, and beliefs. Why should the rest of the world continue to move forward and not us? But we are... we just don't come out and say it. Those of us who have found our own way have had to almost completely disengage from ChristioAssyrianism. Although this works well for me, and I have no desire to attend any conventions or Chritiocentric debates, I do think of those stuck or held behind by the fear instilled in them and the persecution they face at the hand of their own people, Christians! We're a work in progress. That's for sure. And there are no rules, rights or wrongs. Only progress one hopes. E. --------------------- |
